Rating 4 1/2: Zombies have been on the rise in pop culture in recent years. While I am mostly immune to the phenomenon, I am pleasantly giddy to see Zombies making appearance in baked goods. What a fun way to liven (or in this case undeaden) up a creepy occasion. Upon opening the book I admit I was a little intimidated. My foray into the baking scene was short-lived and amateurish at best. I felt reassured, however, that even I too could benefit from this book upon seeing that each recipe has a difficulty rating (using skulls, no less) and that there are very detailed instructions for each piece, where to obtain the various ingredients, and how to improvise if an ingredient is not readily available.
I expected to see the usual creepy crawlies that grace platters at Halloween parties everywhere, but what I didnt expect was the uniqueness and originality of each and every decoration and topping. Not a gummy worm in site! The decoration instructions are very detailed and include pictures and diagrams. There were a couple cupcakes that had me saying huh?, but most were eerily delightful (see eye poppers, brain food, and the crows).
What was even more thrilling (particularly for the decorating-challenged like me) is that each cupcake had its own unique recipe! This feature makes the book a useful edition to every baking kitchen-- even if you dont know fondant from fondue. From basics such as vanilla and devils food cake to the more unique key lime, Italian meringue, and chocolate-mint, this book has something for everyone
Additionally, Zombie enthusiasts will just die over the Know Your Zombies Q&A and factoids tucked in throughout the book. This book is sure to lighten many dark hearts and make kids squeal in delighted horror. All in all, a very enjoyable, useful cookbook I could see myself going to more than once a year.
