An interesting exploration of a young mage's development, and differences in laws and cultures in society. Modesitt's writing style allows one to get a real insight into the personality of his main characters. Unfortunately, in this book, his main character is a shallow young man, but by the end, there is development and hope for him in the sequel. I am looking forward to the sequel, Mage-Guard of Hamor.
