Andy Carpenter accepts the case of Nick Williams, who is accused of killing six people in the law office where he works. Nick's story is that he was kidnapped and taken someplace for a few days and then released at a stop along the highway. He was given a phone and told to call the police and turn himself in. Confused, Nick calls his friend, Marcus Clark.

Marcus, who never asks anything of Andy, requests he take the case as a favor. As Andy continues to delve into the case, he realizes something sinister is happening in the law office but is confused about the crimes committed. This is another one of those stories that keeps the reader glued to the pages.
