This was the least entertaining of the second trilogy. The end of the world as far as the Alectors are concerned and everybody acts completely stoic. Even the Cadmiam captain acts almost more like a robot than a human facing death in the line of duty.
The whole second trilogy felt very forced and this book in particular seemed like a bit of concrete that Modesitt had simply made from a previous mold. The little "chapters" with excerpts from "views of the highest" were completely skippable. They added nothing, detracted greatly and ruined the tiny bit of rhythm the story "may" have had.
