Take the french revolution, mix in a touch of Kushiel's political world, and douse it in gasoline and set it on fire with sex... bold, graphic, tilt-your-head-to-the-side-with-awe sex! It's a good good book. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is that personally, the sex was too graphic and some of the positions were a little unbelievable to me, but that's just a personal choice. The fact that all of the characters grew emotionally throughout the book more than made up for that for me. It's something that a LOT of authors just don't do.
