Visually appealling. Great for little kids. I would estimate about 4 - 7 year old range. They would need it read to them, the writing is not simplified for kids just learning to read, but I'm just guessing those are the ones who would be most taken by the looks of it.

It's hard to describe what this book looks like - but that's certainly it's most arresting feature. Pictures don't do it justice. It's kind of astonishing when you first pick it up. I have never sat in a store and flipped through every page in a kids book, but I did with this one. I bought it right away knowing it would be one of those books that would - one, inspire the beginning of a fasctination with marine life and two, be one of those books that a kid drags up to his/her parents to be read to them again and again.

This really does the best job I can imagine of making one of those very detailed undersea paintings come to life for a kid, outside of an electronic device. Paintings by Christian Riese Lassen. They have cut out parts of the pictures and underlayed them with many colors of very sparkly, glittery paper. It is a hardback, and the pages inside are 'board' style. The best part is the great job they did in putting it together solidly, so you can give it to a 4yo without worrying about their tearing it apart, even if they try to play with the sparkly parts. They're inset in the board pages and well secured between layers.
