The Fundamentalists would NOT approve. Spong has written an up-to-date research backed book that is without comparison. He uses terminology and vocabulary that the average person, who may or may not have any expertise in biblical studies, can understand. He has taken the Bible from a "historical" chronicle (which it isn't) into the realm of understanding the faith message within it's pages. Too many persons (of all faiths) have read the bible with the same mentality as reading a biography of Abraham Lincoln..or whomever. Considering the bible was written nearly 2000 years ago, one needs to understand the historical setting of the WRITERS and the TIME FRAME in which it was written. Interpreting the bible with only 20TH century understanding ends up in the fundamentalist column. It's just great book!
