Another Euro-oater from one of the champions of the cliffhanger. Wheatley usually based his work on historical events (the exceptions being dystopian works) and/or the occult. His characters have all too human foibles and often get themselves in troubles because of human error. As he was a royalist, there is a lot of trouble with fascist and communist elements. Stories usually have a desperate situation every ten pages or so, which is great if you need to interrupt your reading frequently.

The Golden Spaniard is about the Spanish Civil War. The title refers to the code name of a double agent. The plot - competing forces attempt to determine the fate of the gold reserves of a large bank in Madrid.
