Compestine wrote a fictionalized account of her real experiences growing up in revolutionary, communist China with two doctor parents. I think she would have fared much better to write a memoir, as the narration style suffers from an odd third person past tense. It is distracting from the more powerful father/daughter story at its core. However, it is still an interesting look into political revolution from a child's eyes.
