The author also shows " an ingenious simplicity & grace in her stories' says Horn Book. School Library Journal, gave Uchida a "starred reveiw", for "story and characterization". Her books are filled in richly with details of Japanese-American life according to the New York Times Book Review.
This Japanese tale is the story of a poor young farmer,who because he is both kind & courageous, wins a fortune. On his way to a sacred shrine he takes the wrong path, and comes to a dreaded swamp, where he helps a young girl who is being held captive.
