Feel free to take this rating and review with a grain of salt because I read the Advance Uncorrected Proof and hopefully editing made it tighter before publication. I love the overall concept and world created, but it was so repetitive I couldn't read it for very long at a stretch. The author kept telling me the protagonists were falling in love! As a romance reader, I really don't need that kind of reminder every few paragraphs!! I enjoy both mild (Amanda Quick) and steamy (Lori Foster) romances but was irritated by the mismatch between these characters and their level of activity. A succubus held back until the last 50 pages of a 350 page book! I guess it was supposed to show his honor and her true love, but I found it out of character for a demon and an adventurer.
I also thought the borrowing from action/adventure/fantasy movies was a little over the top. When she wrote her own idea (mechanical scorpion) it was great! Why did she have to borrow from Harry Potter (lake filled with creatures), Indiana Jones (booby traps), Lord of the Rings (giant spider) and Star Wars (trash compactor) every time she needed an action element? With so many books to choose from, I won't be seeking more of this.
