Nick and Noel's mothers were best friends growing up and that friendship continued after they got married and started families. When Noel's parents died, the Winters took her in. They've always treated her as one of their own. It helped that her best friend was Nick, their oldest child (and only boy; he has 2 younger sisters- Merry and Holly).
This was a nice friends to lovers story. Noel did have a lot of baggage from her parent's death (she was 16 when they died if I remember correctly) and she opted to deal with her grief by closing off/shutting down. She went into military and later college getting her nursing degree and working at the labor and delivery unit at her local hospital (and I will say for a smaller size town, that hospital's L&D unit was pretty busy).
Nick is finally home for good after 8 years in the military. He and Amber have been (long distance) dating for 8 years. She breaks up with him and he later realizes that they are different people. When Nick and Noel share a kiss at the local bar to make Amber and Trip (Noel's ex) jealous, sparks fly.
There was a lot of back and forth (I want you, but I don't want to mess it up!); a little bit more than necessary I thought. They do finally get there. There is drama with Amber meddling (who no one really likes). Both Noel and Amber are bridesmaids in their friend Gabby's wedding, so wedding planning and drama also play into backdrop.
Overall, a nice Christmas themed romance.
