George Orwell's "1984" is a compelling, suspenseful, and at times frightening read. His vision of the future is bleak and grim yet fascinating at the same time. It amazes me how completely and vividly Orwell imagined his world.

"1984" is the story of a free-thinker trapped in an tyrannical regime in which individual thought is forbidden, where each person is always monitored, privacy is nonexistant, and citizens are intimidated into submission by the omnipresent threat of "Big Brother," the dictator and face of the regime, a figure who may or may not even exist. It is also a story of rebellion and love. I particularly enjoyed the touches of wit and dark humor Orwell uses in describing the inner workings of the system.

A dystopian masterpiece and an literary icon large enough to influence pop culture and countless subsequent writers. As relevant and thought-provoking as ever, even if "Big Brother is watching you."
