Beaten and thrown into a mass grave, a man with no memory of his past is rescued by Lorelai Weatherstoke and nursed back to health. She names him Ash and he begins to care for her during his long recovery. Since Lorelai's cruel brother doesn't want Ash around, he pays to have him thrown onto a ship headed for Shanghai. After years of servitude on the ship, Ash becomes a ruthless pirate known as The Rook. His one mission in life is to acquire Lorelai as his own...and no one is going to stop him.

No one writes a tortured hero like Kerrigan Byrne. Ash had been imprisoned, beaten, suffered amnesia, and sold into servitude for more than half of his life. He's back to rescue Lorelai and make her his bride, even if she objects. Both Ash and Lorelai have changed in the last twenty years. She struggles to find the man she used to know in this brutal pirate who claims to have killed dozens.

This is another great addition to the Victorian Rebels series. Each book seems to get better and better. We learn The Rook's actual identity early in the book, but there is another surprise near the end that I certainly did not guess. My rating: 5 Stars.
