Intriguing story of three girls walking to school when a tragic accident changes their lives forever: one dies, one suffers paralysis and severe brain injuries, and the third walks away with extreme guilt.

Allison and Kitty are half-sisters, never bonding the way Allison hoped. Kitty is closer to neighbor Vanessa and the two of them are always picking on Allison. Vanessa dies in the accident, Kitty has brain damage and cannot speak, Allison becomes an art teacher, barely scraping by on low wages. When a job is posted at local men's prison, Allison takes it to help pay her rent.

No spoilers, I'll just say a lot happens at the prison. And new technologies finally allow Kitty to speak so we find out what really happened the day of the accident. Story has happy ending, but it will take you on psychological roller coaster getting there!
