I got a copy of this book to review through NetGalley. This was another fun tomb-raiding paranormal adventure featuring Owl and her cohorts. I really enjoyed this book a lot.
Owl is getting used to her new job working for Mr. Kurosawa, a red dragon who loves ancient artifacts. He has his sights set on some pieces from the Syrian City of the Dead. Owl is always up for a good theft, but this is one of the most highly guarded dig sites in the world and there is a rumor that some of the items might be cursed. Oh and not to mention the items might enable people to resurrect the dead leading to an undead army ravaging the earth. Of course, Owl is up for the challenge in her own stubborn way.
I loved all the tomb-raiding, the ancient curses, and interesting mythological monsters we run into throughout the story. There is a lot of action and I really enjoy the scenes where Owl is creeping through ancient and creepy tombs.
I really enjoy the characters, they have a lot of depth and are fun to read about. I love Rynn, he does a great job of backing up Owl and doesn't take her crap (well he does take some of her crap but he is trying to hold her accountable for her actions). I also enjoyed Captain, the vampire attack cat. Although I continue to find some of the scenes with Captain to be a bit forced and improbable.
My only problem with this book is that Owl doesn't grow or change much as a character. She keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. It's painful to read about and a bit frustrating. I really don't understand why her friends put up with her continued stubbornness and incompetent behavior.
Overall this was an excellent continuation of the Owl series. I continue to enjoy the world, the action, the mythology, and the characters. My only big problem with this book is that we aren't seeing Owl grow any as a character. I would recommend to those who enjoy action packed urban fantasies full of adventure. Fans of Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, and Tomb Raider should enjoy this series.
