This is a coming of age novel which I found boring and slow at first. It was hard to care about any of the characters especially Mabel the narrator, but I did feel sorry for her at first.

Then the book does a turn around when Mabel, the dumpy, frumpy roommate of wealthy, spoiled Ev, is invited to spend the summer with her at her family's conclave. She uncovers many family secrets which can destroy them but since she is welcomed by the clan and desperately wants to belong, she keeps them to herself at first. That is until a tragedy occurs and everything starts tumbling downwards.

Except for a glaring omission of Mabel coming to terms with her family, it all comes together in the last chapter. I was not quite satisfied in the end.

Definitely not for teens and tweens!
