From the dust jacket: "Neil Miller traveled through small towns, rural areas, midsize cities, suburbs, and large urban centers in search of what it means-and is like-to be gay in America...But more than the territory, this...book explores the enormous changes that are taking place in the lives of lesbians and gay men.
The America Miller takes us to is the America of an openly gay mayor of a Missouri town (population 420), a lesbian coal miner in West Virginia, two gay dairy farmers in Minnesota, an AIDS activist in North Dakota, and a gay American Indian in Rapid City, South Dakota. This is a book of reportage, and as such it endeavors to relate equally the stories of gay men and women and to use the experience of each group to illuminate the other. Miller journeys far beyond the gay ghettos of large cities to ascertain whether the acceptance and self-acceptance the anonymity of an urban environment provides are reflected at the grass roots."
