The Miniaturist, Jessie Burton's debut novel, is the story of Nella who, upon her marriage, enters the world of wealth and intrigue in seventeenth century Amsterdam. The book has a promising start with hints of mystery and the supernatural. As the book progresses, it comes into the every day world of individual choices and social norms, leaving me wondering why the supernatural element is included at all.
