Although I am more familiar with the television series, author Gerritsens tenth novel featuring Detective Jane Rizzoli and ME Maura Isles, is a very enjoyable thriller. The plot revolves around three unique orphans: Claire, Teddy, and Will, all of whom have survived their families (both natural and foster) being killed. Teddy is taken to a secure location in Maine: Evensong, a school for survivors that has connections to the mysterious Mephisto Society. Evensong is also where Julian Perkins, Mauras friend, attends school and has become the leader of the Jackals, a criminology club (dismissed as CSI High School by Rizzoli).
Rizzoli is the only one who reaches Teddy, who has survived the deaths of his foster family in Boston. Ill try to keep this review spoiler-free, but suffice it to say that the tragedies the three orphans have survived appear somewhat interconnected, as the plot winds towards a tense, violent conclusion. The secret that bind the three together goes back both in time and in space.
Theres a subplot about Janes father wanting his wife, Angie, back; this detracts from the more tautly plotted story about the three orphans, and I found it silly at times. The book, however, does remove Jane and Maura from their familiar Boston, MA, environment, and forces them to confront issues that developed between the characters in previous novels. All in all, a fun read.
