In the previous book, "The Foundation" was taken down (at least the one location) and those that had been kidnapped, imprisoned, and experimented were freed. Zeke was one of those individuals, held captive for several months. After his escape, he makes it home to his farm. He was always a bit of a loner. He also has new abilities he is unsure of. Having had an affinity for animals, he now has increased senses and an ability to communicate with animals. He has a tragic past (his mom committed suicide and he father drank himself to death). He finds himself in need of a job.
Neva is the local vet and is in need of a handyman. Zeke turns out to be the perfect fit. Neva also has a family history (she comes from money and her parents disagree with her job choice. Her twin brother is also missing). This is a nice story of 2 people who are a little lost and find what they need in the other. There is also a secondary story of a murderer targeting women that resemble Neva. I thought that the "why" was a bit blah and would have liked more (or had that story-line deleted). There isn't a lot of attention paid to Zeke's kidnapping/imprisonment; he didn't want to focus on it as it was in the past. I did think the phone call he got was creepy and out of left field (and not necessary).
