Joanne Baldwin has quit the Wardens. She is forbidden to use her powers and now earns a living as a TV extra on the weather portion of the news. She is still desperately trying to find a way to heal her Djinn lover David, who has been turned into an Ifrit. Suddenly the Wardens are after her, believing her to be responsible for the unusual and dangerous weather patterns in her area. The Djinn have split into factions, and one side is killing humans to free their brethren and recruit them to fight the Wardens for power. The detective partner of the evil Quinn is determined to wring the truth from her about his demise, and on top of it all, her sister has arrived on her doorstep after being dumped by her husband for a younger woman.
Joanne's plate is certainly full, but somehow I am less sympathetic to her in this book. Caine keeps ramping up the magic in her world, and it seems like it has the potential to get out of hand and be too much for her to handle. So far she has managed to juggle the different supernatural aspects of her world while raising the stakes with each novel, but if she keeps trying to top herself it will eventually become absurd if she's not careful. I'll have to see how the next books turn out.
