The objective of Patient H.M.: A Story of Memory, Madness, and Family Secrets by Luke Dittrich is unclear. Is it about Patient HM, the surgeon William Scoville, a broader survey of the scientific study of memory, or the author's struggle to understand his own family history? The book attempts to do all of those, and, as a result, completes addresses none of them. The lack of footnotes and a bibliography in a nonfiction book is also particularly noticeable.
