This is a fairly short novella and the clever trick works because the story is so short. The secret could not have been maintained in a regular length story.
The story is told in the present and the past, in alternating chapters. Because I don't want to divulge the secret, I will say no more about the story other than to say that the likelihood of carrying this off successfully was rather small. 3.5 stars
