Mirasol and the Master are the key characters in this novel. Mirasol is a beekeeper, a tradition she inherited. She is the first Chalice of this background. Her bees comfort and guide her. Master is the younger brother of the former brother who died with the former Chalice. Because of the conflict between brothers he was sent away to become a priest of fire.

Since the deaths of former Chalice and Master Willowlands has been in chaos. The earthlines are troubled creating multiple problems for the humans who live in the land. Fires, gashes, unusual weather are the norm. Chalice and Master are the guiding forces of the land.

Normally the Chalice and Master are trained for their roles from childhood but Mirasol and Master had no such luxury. They learn as they go often by trial and error, sometimes with success and other times failure. Mirasol spends hours in the libraries learning about past Chalices and Masters.
When a movement to replace the Master evolves it's up to Mirasol to bridge the gap between the people and Master whoever he may be - the current master or a man from outside. This then is her task and it's most difficult because she wants to do the right thing for Willowlands. If she chooses wrongly the land may break into pieces. What happens? That's for those who read this novel to discover.

I do so enjoy the writings of this author who is one of my favorite authors. Her imagination, worlds and characters are often as gentle and lovely as Mirasol. Of such people I wish our world had more.
