If you've read the other books in the series you know the characters. This one begins with war on the Empire. Nasuada's skilled leadership takes the Varden and other peoples of the land against Galbatorix and the Empire. Eragon, Saphira, Arya, and Roran (Eragon's cousin) are her key aides. It's difficult to keep the tale moving when the author and the reader need to keep track of what is happening with everyone but somehow he does it. I enjoyed Roran's experiences which lend another aspect to the book. His only connection with magic is the wards that Eragon gives his cousin to protect him against their enemies who often are blessed with magic or controlled by it. Roran's love for his beautiful Katrina lends a gentleness to the story that is heart warming.

Eragon grows slowly into his role as a leader who doubts his talents but does his best anyway. Don't all leaders doubt themselves again and again? However, like Eragon, they keep their doubts inside while they project confidence and courage. I read this book quickly so it did not seem so long until Galbatorix is defeated. At that point I thought the book should have ended or shortly thereafter. My only complaint was the time it took to wind up the ending. The author, perhaps because of his youth, felt it necessary to account for every key character of his story. Thus it kept going on and on. I was sad about that but I did like this series and am hopeful that the author will keep writing. He certainly has a fantastic imagination and so much talent. Yes, I enjoyed the read.
