Bella Swan dreads her 18th birthday because it will make her older than her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen. Her birthday celebration becomes a disaster when an accident causes her to bleed--a dangerous problem among vampires. Edward decides she is better off, or at least safer, without his family around her and he decides they should all move away.
Bella is very depressed when he leaves. She takes some solace in her friendship with Jacob, the son of an old family friend. In her sadness, she tries wild and dangerous things and realizes that she can hear Edward in her head warning her when she does. While she only wants friendship with Jacob, he may want something more. Eventually she learns a secret about Jacob and her friends that may save her life.
All together not as good as the first book. It is dark and depressing. Meyers spends too much time telling us how sad she is. I don't like how dependent she is on Edward and how she uses Jake. I am still annoyed that they never explain how she can hear his voice!
