It was better than some of the SGA novels, but not as good as the best of them.
The good: The worldbuilding had some inventive steampunk extrapoltaions of old time tech and it was interesting. Some of the original characters were well done and made you care about them. The Team was together most of the time.
The bad or the mediocre:
Much of the time most of the characters were in-character. Teyla was out the most.
The world-- most of what happened on this alien world in a far distant galaxy didn't sound alien to me. The nobles and commoners dying of easy to fix diseases, etc. Much of it sounded too Earth-like to me. And, there were some slip-ups with the Team using Britishisms. Torches for flashlights, and a few other little things that might not jump out at other people but did to me. Most people might not even notice.
Overall, it was very slow to get into but then sped up and I ignored the parts that took me out of the SGA world and read really fast.
