Female protagonist who has a heart of gold and a smart aleck tongue! I am came by this series late to the game and started mid series but it's been wonderful. This is the third book of Nevada Barr I have read and I regret I didn't start years ago on her series. As she writes only about a book a year and I read a book or two a week I should catch up in no time.

Anna Pigeon is the lead, she is a park ranger for the National Park Service and she is a widow.
She comes by mysterious circumstances thru her job as a ranger which in case you don't know is the police force for the park but with extra duties thrown in. For example they enforce park rules, investigate crimes, give directions and assistance to visitors, provide passes or permission to certain specialties activities like hiking a mountain or diving to a wreck or fishing.
She loves the outdoors without being gung ho exercise freak or environmental extraordinaire, were you read and gradually feel bad about yourself for not driving a hybrid and exercising 2 hrs a day. Another thing I love is the narrator Barbara Rosenblat, marvelous, extraordinary, terrific and perfect. Love all the books she has narrated even when I didn't like the books! ð
