Reading this book reminds you why SI is such a great magazine. In-the-moment articles are nice, necessary and occasionally, well written. But it's the longer, drawn out pieces that reveal the true prose of the writer and touch the soul of the reader. Those articles are rare, but after 50 years, the collection is impressive.
I read 90% of the articles in the book. I thought it would be closer to 75% but I always allowed myself the opportunity to read the first two pages to see if the writing would draw me in when the subject didn't. Where I would normally skip articles on hunting, wildlife, ice skating, etc., I found some read gems in the writing on these non-traditional sports.
Excellent book.
