From the barest of historical facts, Carolyn Meyer has constructed a tale with the ring of truth. She has brought to life Anne Hathaway, the girl who would marry William Shakespeare. Meyer's wonderful story is full of telling details about the lives of ordinary people in Elizabethan times -- day-to-day toil on the farm, holiday customs, marriage traditions, the excitement generated by the queen's progress, and the constraints placed on girls and women.
The reader follows Anne from her girlhood to young womanhood, sharing her sorrows, her small joys and her bittersweet romance with a man wedded as much to the stage as to his wife.
