Rather slow-paced for a thriller. On page 13, colulmnist Charley Webb gets an e-mail threatening her children. Over 400 pages of set-up later, her daughter is taken, and 30 pages after that, it's all over with just a few literary loose ends to tie up.

Meanwhile, a convoluted plot unfolds, replete with a chilling murderer, a couple of dysfunctional families, and a heroine who, for all her brittle cynicism, turns out to be rather naïve.
