Bookshop owners Penelope McClure and her aunt Sadie have just been given an extremely rare collection of Edgar Allen Poe's works. There are rumors that the books contain a secret code that leads to a hidden treasure, a rumor that someone obviously believes, as every buyer of a book from the collection is killed. The police think these are accidents, but the antagonistic police chief seems intent on pinning the theft of the missing book on Pen, and she's going to need her ghost friend PI Jack Shepard to get her out of this mess and solve the Poe mystery before more people die.

As usual, Alice Kimberly produces an intriguing and entertaining story. The series is interesting enough to make me want to continue it, although nothing about it really grabs me and holds on. Good for a light, cozy read, and in this volume the facts about Poe make it fascinating despite the lukewarm solution to the mystery.
