This is the second book in a three-part series (see below). In this story, Jake Sullivan (hero) is a very complicated man. Two years ago, he lost his first wife; they lived on Montana land Jake was trying to claim. Jake abandoned his claim and drank heavily. When he comes back, he finds a woman in his house.

Emily Bright has always lived by the largesse of her sisters; she wants to be independent. She ran away from Philadelphia, telling her sister Kate that she was going to visit her other sister, Anthea in Colorado. Now, Emily has sunk most of her money in this patch of homesteading land in Montana. When Jake returns to lay claim to the land, he and Emily argue.

Finally, he decides to wait Emily out; she seems too tiny and Eastern to be able to handle the hardships for very long. Kate sends a letter to Emily saying she was coming for a visit to check on Emilys idyllic life. She also wants to meet Emilys husband.

Caught in her own lies, Emily promises Jake that she will abandon the land if he will pretend that they are married until Kate leaves. Reluctantly, Jake agrees.
