I found this book to be an interesting mix of a timeless fantasy with all the magic and intrigue with a modern-day teenager. As the reader steps into Avalon with Dana, that mixture becomes more apparent. Jenna Black spends most of the novel writing in a style that is very similar to other fantasy novels and weaves a story full of magic. But she does so from Dana's perspective, and at times puts in lines of thought or dialogue for Dana that very much reminded me of a modern-day teenager.

I really felt for Dana. It seemed every time she thought she had found someone to trust, that person was using her in some way or being dishonest with her in some way.

I think Jenna Black did a great job of setting this series up in this book. I am looking forward to the next installment.
