generational conflict in India: two children (a son and daughter) who want to follow more Western life paths conflict with their father, an affluent contractor who follows Indian traditions himself and wants his children to do the same; Ruth Prawer Jhabvala writes screenplays for Merchant/Ivory movies, and this book has the kind of thoughtful characterization and rich descriptions of setting that characterize those movies
