By looking at Fern Michael's books, I always thought she was a Romance novelist only. Since I don't care for Romance novels, I've never read her before. But "Payback" is part of a series of suspense books featuring 7 women who help each other get revenge upon the person(s) who ruined their lives. The leaders of this group are Myra and Charles. Myra is very wealthy and is able to fund each of the missions these women go out on. Charles is an ex-CIA operative of sorts (above the CIA if there is such a thing) who uses his experience from the field and his technical knowledge to guide the missions. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes their suspense wrapped around some revenge fantasies. If you're into justice but see so little of it nowadays, this is the ideal series. None of the villains are killed but they do get their just desserts as they say. Michaels keeps the pace moving and the characters interesting. I did find the ending somewhat unbelievable but in fantasyland it's a pretty good solution to the problem of keeping the bad guys alive while at the same time, making them disappear from the public eye. You'll just have to read the book to find out the groups' solution!
