TWO YEARS WITHOUT SLEEP: Working Moms Talk About Having a Baby and a Job
reviewed on

This was given to us from my husband's workplace when we were almost due with our twins. Although a lot of the facts and figures are nice to know, I generally found the book to be pessimistic and very negative. "Oh, I had the worst experience with this..." and "No one at work was understanding of my personal problems with my kids". I honestly didn't bother to read more than the fact pages after a while, because the women interviewed were so depressing and no one had anything positive to say about being a new mom! The author ("collaborator" really - it's a collection of facts and interview lines) claimed to have interviewed hundreds of women, yet all of the quotes were from only a small group of women (maybe 20, if that!). There were typos (which drive me crazy!) and even some of the facts and figures were in no way even possible. I forget the particular statistics, but the percentages given were not quantified - they had to be percentages of a certain population or target segment, not of the population in general. I stopped reading it because it was starting to affect my outlook on being a working mom, and I felt that a book full of complainers was no reason I couldn't make my experience a positive one.
