This book is a "bridge" book for the final book in the series. That's the only explanation I can come up with for the lagging text and story. There's lots of description and it's done well, but there isn't a whole lot of action IMO. It's okay because most long series have at least one book that is for laying ground for the next books. This one just didn't have as much interest in itself for me. I'm sure the final book will be better for having read this one. The reader learns a lot about the Canim as well as the Vord. I think I might be glad that the installments in this series are spaced like they are.
