With the death of Lord Ashworth who months before was suspected of kidnapping and murdering street children, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, finds himself once again searching for a killer. Brutally murdered, Ashworth lay in his silk hung, blood soaked bed and the clues seem to indicate a woman is responsible. Devlin fears that his beloved young niece, Stephanie, who had married this sadistic nobleman, may be responsible. Ashworth had abandoned her, sending her to her father after the birth of twins.
The problem is that the suspects are many. To find who is responsible, Sebastian must examine the man's life and look into the schemes of a Russian duchess whose weird sexual forays make her a match for the dead manâs whom she bedded as well. Furthermore, he finds that Stephanie has secrets of her own. Meanwhile Hero continues research about London's poor, interviewing night soil men and rag and bone pickers. They may have seen the comings and goings to the man's abode the night of the murder.
As the investigation continues more people die indicating that the murderer is eliminating anyone who might have seen him the night of the murder. Once again, Sebastian is stalked by those who want to halt his investigation and as the novel concludes, he encounters the killer who is bent on killing Sebastion. Once of the best I've read in this series, I cannot help but recommend this episode to anyone who follows Sebastian and his wife, Hero.
