This is the 2nd book in the series, but it is not necessary to read the 1st to understand what is going on. Keri Arthur has created a world in which a secret society of paranormals (The Damask Circle) police those of their kind when things get out of hand. Witches, vampires, shapeshifters, zombies, etc., both good guys and bad guys, make an appearance.
This is the same world that the Nikki & Michael series is set in - Michael is a member of The Damask Circle. It seems to be the same formula in each book:
Bad things happen...
someone from The Damask Circle (or a team) is sent to investigate...
they report to a bossy witch supervisor...
a mortal with special powers is involved and needs to be protected while they hunt down the evil guys...
a team member (who has vowed not to get involved with anyone due to the extremely dangerous nature of his job) falls for the mortal with special powers...
the mortal with special powers has been hurt in the past and doesn't trust anyone...
they take out the bad guys and fall in love.
Still, even though it is very formulaic, the story is inventive and interesting. No warm fuzzies and people get hurt and die. If you are looking for a cutesy paranormal romance, this is not what you want.
