This is an award-winning book, and for good reason. The book explores the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese-American charged with murdering a fisherman in 1954. Always in the backdrop is the fact that World War II was still fresh on everyone's mind, a time when the island of San Piedro was divided, with their Japanese-American neighbors sent off into exile.

It's a story about a trial, but it also gets at the heart of what happened during those terrible years. David Guterson shows how the deepest hurts can appear to be cleansed and forgiven, but are always lurking in the background, ready to rise up with a vengeance.

If you like history, suspense and a bit of romance, this is your book.
