The author distills a lot of scientific information into very concise explanations of why our bodies often pile on the fat cells as we age, and why it seems to concentrate on just some parts of our bodies. She also shares sensible ideas about how we can control it, _to the extent that we can_. Her own brand of humor, used throughout, makes it seem more personal.
This NOT a book of specific weight loss and exercise "plans," strict and unforgiving regimens that set some of us up (we know who we are!) for procrastination, excuses, and then a sense of failure when we ultimately abandon it. There ISN'T a lot of (what I think of as) extraneous information to puff up a few pages of material into a full-blown book. It's just a common-sense, "real life" book that does not dangle the promise of perfection in front of us, but offers positive ways to be self-aware and active in our choices.
