I really liked the divorced duchess turns independent businesswoman angle who reunites with her first love. The tale might have a few loose ends, but what started out as revenge that reignites into love feels fresh during the excesses of the Gilded Age. According to Rodale, several of her characters were based on actual people, and I enjoyed the added emphasis of the department store lifestyle. The romance was breezy and a bit modern for the era, but overall I had a delightful time watching Beatrice spread her wings and Dalton sort his priorities. And watch for the ending that matches the story. Rodale has a few remarks about that, too. 4 stars.
