It's easy to see why Drizzt instantly became one of the most revered and loved heroes in fantasy. He is a real character in that he has faults and weaknesses, but he is a hero in that he constantly strives to live as a moral being in a world based on violence, deceit, and pain.

In this, the first novel about Drizzt, R . A. Salvatore artfully constructs the world into which Drizzt is born and then follows his growth, both physical and moral, as he comes to realize the true nature of his world.

R. A. Savatore reinvents elves in a unique, thrilling, and compelling way. The writing is superb, the characters fully developed, and the world of Drizzt fully realized.

A real classic. I highly recommend this book and the following two books about Drizzt (Exile and Sojourn), as some of the best works in fantasy.
