Written in 1950 and re-released in 1991, this book is a successful attempt to combine a knowledgeable discussion of the geological and archaeological history of Great Britain with the author's personal appreciation of the beauty of that development. Written in a mostly personal and personable tone, the author was a noted archaeologist, a founder of the British Commission for UBESCO, and a governor of the British Film Institute, as well as the editor of the well-known two-volume "The World of the Past". Introduction by Robert Finch.
