A Dog Named Slugger is the story of a yellow Lab mobility assistance dog and his partner Leigh. Slugger is Leigh's first service dog, so the reader is privy to all of Leigh's emotional ups and downs as she decides if a service dog might be useful. We follow their training together, as Leigh's perfectionist tendencies calm, and her normal new handler fears about her new partner are alleviated. The book continues through Leigh and Slugger's long partnership, Slugger's retirement, Leigh's struggle whether or not to partner with another SD, and Slugger's death. The tone of the story stays hopeful, despite some of the difficult times Leigh and Slugger go through. Any dog lover will enjoy this story and the lessons of partnership, faith, perseverance, and inter/independence included within.
