Gemmell writes some good characters, and puts them into interesting situations. This book has the feel of being first in a series, but I don't know of any others in it. The "God-like" beings are shown to just be technologically superior, until someone shows up to challenge thier tech. with a different but equal one. Then they need the race they've enslaved, to help them out of a tight spot.
