This is a fantastic book about the inner workings of Washington and how a handful of men pulled the strings that resulted in funding Afghan fighters while subsequently taking money away from other dramas like Iran-Contra, etc. It explains a lot about how a couple of very strong personalities are responsible for current events in Afghanistan, as well as contributing to the creation of anti-American jihad. Absolutely fascinating.
If you saw the movie, the movie did not do this book or the facts justice and skimmed over way too many important events. Totally worth the read, especially if the U.S. government bores and disgusts you.
