This second book in the ROGUES IN TEXAS series is even better than the first! Harrison Bainbridge, the second son of an English earl, comes to Texas with two other friends. After harvesting cotton the first summer, they decide there has to be an easier way to make money.

After the Civil War, lots of cattle were roaming over Texas because farming/ranching had been disrupted, the families had died, and/or the soldier/owners had not returned from war. Cattle without a brand were available to anyone who could collect and herd them.

Kit and Harry decide to find these cattle and herd them to the hungry Northerners, and sell them at a huge profit. However, they do not have the funds to undertake this enterprise. Jessye, a saloon-girl, does have the money and insists on accompanying them on the cattle drive.

Thus begins an odyssey with a horrific near-ending. The rest of the book is about learning to live with the consequences. It is an emotional story; Lorraine Heath does a wonderful job of getting the reader involved.

The best bet is to read them in order. These characters show up again in the book, THE OUTLAW AND THE LADY. I reviewed that book earlier.

This series is great if you like historical romance with a western slant.
